Craighalbert Centre: hydrotherapy pool extension

Craighalbert Centre

The Craighalbert Centre is the Scottish Centre for children with motor impairments.

Robin has been commissioned to design two major extensions – a Hydrotherapy Pool, completed August 2000, and the Outreach Centre, completed December 2002.

Funding for the pool, which was provided by the Friends of Craighalbert and the National Lottery, enabled the construction of a 5.6 x 10m pool to suit classes of up to 12 children with individual carers and an instructor.

The pool hall is very well insulated, essential for maintaining the high operating temperatures required.

The Outreach Centre provides a training room and two additional classrooms separated by a large sliding screen, which can allow use as a single space.

The 'Toblerone' shaped vent on the roof is a passive ventilation system.

Howard Liddell was involved at the start of this project.
